I Acquired An Old Farm Tractor - And It's Also My Best Toy Ever

Having trouble choosing the right tractor for you? try sear lawn tractors as it may be the answer you are looking for..

My old farm tractor is the foremost toy I ever bought. I am a simple man, I did before enjoy working away at my car, changing the plugs, tuning the carburetor, merely 'ole tinkering; that changed (combined with the rest of the world) when computers entered the picture. Even though they've got revolutionized just how we live and work, they made tinkering anything of the past. I refused to allow which happen after i bought my first old farm tractor. I'm not really a farmer by trade, however i love the land and enjoy dragging my bush hog, it keeps me in touch with the land. And tinkering? Well that keeps my old farm tractor running smooth and offers me a little while from the keyboard.

I many userful stuff here as i started qq9d5n looking for my first old farm tractor. Old is just a term if your older tractor runs good and does the job intended, but you need to check thoroughly when shopping. With my case, I brought a neighbor of mine along who just was a John Deere rep, feeling certain he'd give my potential old farm tractor purchase, an excellent "once over".

Obviously what's a good older tractor for me, might not be your bailiwick at all, different strokes many different folks. So think about (that you didn't know) will you be purchasing old farm tractor for work or play (restoration)? Would you like to spend less by having an older tractor, or are you waxing nostalgic and seeking to generate a pristine show tractor?

One other thing to consider may be the form of service you'll expect; will you be working the field, tinkering like I, or only bringing the old farm tractor out for county fairs. In different these cases, if you are looking an adult tractor, you need to ensure that she's mechanically sound. In case you are actually a collector (or tinkerer) chances are you'll know a nearby mechanic to put, they are worth how much, let's face it and may assist a gem, or avoid a lemon.

Initial thing my John Deere rep did was climb about the old workhorse to see if she cranked up easy, telling me if she did, this is a good indicator that this battery, compression, ignition and fuel line is in working order. So if instead it won't start, don't head to the hills, make absolutely certain the retail price is correct, as it requires some work.

The farmer who owned the old farm tractor told us to go forward and... "Take 'er for a spin", he smiled then walked away to do a little chores. While all sellers may not be so friendly, it's very important to test the tractor engine when it is started; are then leaks, how exactly does the engine sound? Then, shut her down, if the old farm tractor starts again.

When you are warming the old farm tractor up, and if you have a tight schedule ahead to essentially take her out from the barn, look at the brakes, if there okay, great, another mark for your plus column, when they are mushy and may need work, ask how difficult a brake job is, some older tractors have brakes which are quite challenging to function on; this is when that farm tractor mechanic friend can be found in.

Check to see should the exhaust is, slightly blue or black smoke may indeed indicate a needed tune-up, blue smoke may say ring job. In that case, plan accordingly, or find another old gem to acquire.

Listen closely to how the old farm tractor engine sounds any unusual deep throated clunking sounds? Let's hope not, but when do, the perfect time to thank the property owner for his time, and head for an additional prospective choice.

In the past, back when that they had "full service" gas stations, Walking out to the attendant saying... "Check the oil sir"? Which is definitely something you should do along with your older (antique) tractor. Oil in a very tractor could be the lifeblood, would it look clear (indicating a recent change); or is there foam or water present. Possibly drops of water that may be the actual top gasket and problems might exist. Water inside the oil is rarely a great sign; again, time for the "thank you and also goodbye".

Anytime you purchase some machinery with the "new" worn off, take the time to make sure you buy the car has aged gracefully. None folks be interested in a vintage antique tractor rusting in a field, but neither will we want to buy a "pig in a poke". Ask, look, examine, test; if you are being satisfied, take out the checkbook, put a grin on the farmer's face, then go ahead and take old farm tractor home and acquire some work done.

Restoring Vintage John Deere Tractors

Collecting John Deere Memorabilia

If you are thinking about starting a collection you might consider John Deere memorabilia.

The John Deere Company has devoted fans and collectors throughout the world. These devotees are described as "bleeding green."  I must admit to being one of these fans. A small collection of its licensed collectibles such as miniature tractors, tins, plaques, road signs, salt and pepper shaker tractors, tree ornaments, toy banks, clocks, trays and cups occupy my modest dwelling. "Bleeding green" can be addictive.

The John Deere name is known worldwide today but it wasn't always that way. Born into poverty in Vermont in 1804, John Deere persevered and became an accomplished blacksmith. After a move to Illinois, Deere discovered that the soil there was thicker and heavier and stuck to the cast iron plows brought from New England. The ingenious Deere designed a polished plow shaped like an icebreaker, which solved the problem, and sales of it took off and so did his company. He went on to design other items such as a rider cultivator, cotton planters, wagons, buggies and even tapped into the bicycle craze for a period.

It wasn't until 1918 after the acquisition of the Waterloo Traction Engine Company that the company began to manufacture tractors for which it is now famous. In the 1950's the company moved into the residential sector when it began to produce lawn and garden tractors.

Today the John Deere Company is a worldwide organization producing equipment for farming, construction, residential, landscaping and other markets. Its leaping deer symbol first introduced in 1876 and tweaked throughout the years, and its yellow and green theme is internationally recognized. The hallmark and success of the company is innovation–a concept the customer oriented Deere insisted on early in his career. His motto was, "I will not put my name on a product that does not have in it the best that is in me."

Almost from the beginning, toy companies and other manufacturers began to produce miniature replicas of its products and other memorabilia. Almost anything the company made is available in miniature. Genuine John Deere items will have some form of identification indicating the company licensed the products. Imposters will have no such identification. Although the familiar green and yellow theme may appear on an item, it may not be a true Deere product.

These miniatures and memorabilia sell as well as the actual John Deere products. An early hand panted iron toy tractor can be quite valuable. As always, rarity and condition determine value of any vintage item. Two excellent reference books on Deere collectibles are Warman's John Deere Collectibles by David Doyle and John Deere Collectibles by Brenda Kruse. Both volumes have colorful photographs and suggested values.

This writer was supposed at the large loyal following of this famous brand. There are many John Deere museums housing both the real items and the collectible memorabilia. Some auctions have also been set up just to sell John Deere memorabilia.

Collectors' clubs have been formed for the addicted fans and collectors. In addition websites have been established to buy and sell Deere collectibles, with discussion groups, news and postings about upcoming Deere auctions. A little research on the web will put you in touch with one of these groups. One that I found is located at http//www.greencollectors.com.

The beauty about Deere collectibles is that they keep making them so it doesn't cost much to assemble a fine collection of Deere memorabilia. I recently bought a licensed miniature tractor for one dollar at a dollar store. Although you might not find that good of a bargain, a search of flea markets, yard sales, garage sales, and the internet will yield some nicely priced pieces. Deere collectibles come in a seemingly never ending variety from miniature tractors, to dishes, to paintings, to tins, pens, fobs–even clothing.

An inexpensive and colorful collection can be put together from Deere memorabilia and such a devoted and large following has developed through clubs, auctions and internet sites that collecting these pieces is a good way to meet interesting people. If you're thinking about starting a collection, those John Deere items can be quite alluring.
